Dandruff is a condition which gives off flaky skin in the scalp which clings to the hair strands and cause itchiness. This scalp condition is known as seborrheic dermatitis. There are several causes that can be tribute for dandruff but the causes are not fully clear as to why it occurs. Winter conditions also cause dandruff.

The dandruff conditions generally decrease after the age 50 years in adults. The risk of dandruff increases if hair is not washed regularly and the hair is not brushed properly. The white dandruff flakes can be seen on the hair strands and this is not only embarrassing for the individual but it shows others of the lack of personal care because of which dandruff must be treated once it appears in the scalp.
If there are other dermatological problems and medical conditions then dandruff can appear on the scalp of an individual. Using the wrong hair care products could also result in dandruff. Whatever remedies are used it should first be in consultation with a doctor.
Some of the main causes that have been identified for dandruff are stress levels which trigger dandruff, changes in lifestyles, shampooing hair too often, little exposure to sunlight and damp living conditions.
The regular remedies that are used are anti fungal shampoos but the scaly patches need to be removed before anti fungal shampoo is applied to the hair. Tree tea oil is another remedy that can be used without a doctor’s prescription.
Any anti fungal shampoo that contains one of the ingredients that is mentioned below should be bought and used to control dandruff and prevent it.
Care must be taken that all the above ingredients may not suit all the people who need to use an anti dandruff shampoo therefore the allergy test should first be done and a doctor should be consulted before using the shampoo with any one of the above mentioned ingredients.
As mentioned earlier the main cause of dandruff is Seborrheic dermatitis. The second cause is the change in hormones at puberty for girls and boys. In Seborrheic dermatitis the skin is oily and there is irritation on the skin. Such individuals are at a higher risk of getting dandruff flakes.
A doctor should be consulted when there is irritation on the skin in the back, ears, breastbone, eyebrows and on the sides of the nose. This condition generally occurs when a fungus called Malassezia starts to inhabit the scalp and feed on the natural oils of the hair follicles. The fungus remains dormant unless it becomes hyper active in state. When he extra skin that develops dies and falls off it mixes with the oils causing dandruff.
Combing hair sufficiently or brushing it regularly will also lower the risk of dandruff. Individuals who are yeast – sensitive also tend to have dandruff.
